Welcome to Smart Food Rx, a site dedicated to exploring food as medicine.

There is an obesity epidemic in the United States that is becoming a public health crisis. Our medical system is overwhelmed with treating diseases that could be significantly improved by making simple changes to our daily food choices.  Many health conditions respond favorably to different nutrients in foods. We know diet is important in controlling diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, but food can also make a difference in improving symptoms of many other medical conditions.

The founder of Smart Food Rx is a board-certified physician, 20-year military veteran, wife and mother. Her background and training have instilled the importance of using scientifically backed studies and fact, not pseudoscience and fad, in medical decision making. Her pathway to culinary medicine started with a curiosity of how mindful dietary choices could diminish the aches and pains of growing older. Further research led to the discovery of culinary medicine as an evidence-based practice that explores food and the art of cooking with the science of medicine. She became a certified culinary medicine specialist and hopes to share her knowledge of how simple food choices can improve health.
